Why Go To A Drug Rehab?

For most of us, drug rehabs are seen as places where people who are addicted to drugs go to in order to get rid of that addiction. While this is true to a certain degree, there is a lot more treatment and counselling given to the patients than people are aware of.

A drug addiction is a term describing a person’s dependence on a drug – whether it be prescribed medicine or street drugs. When people with drug addictions are admitted to a drug rehab centre, the aim is to treat them for their dependence on drugs so that they can become stable people and carry on with everyday life without surrendering to the need for a drug.

While it seem pretty straightforward, it is a lifelong commitment and it means the patient will have to remove himself from the type of circles in which he moved while being addicted to drugs so that he can move on with his life. For some addicts a change like that is their biggest fear as they would have to adjust to life without having something to be dependent on.

It is not often that drug addicts book themselves into a drug rehab, but rather a concerned friend, spouse, partner or relative. While addicted to drugs, patients will undergo a personality change without knowing it. For those around the addict it will become obvious. As will other aspects like what the impact of the addiction is on the addict’s career, family and health.

Different drug rehab centres follow different types of treatments. There are treatments based on religion, medicine, spirituality or holistic means. Thanks to so many centres available, addicts have a choice as to what kind of treatment they would prefer and at which centre they would like to undergo this treatment as a patient.

Many centres try to incorporate the patient’s family and friends into his rehabilitation so that they are aware of the matter and will be there to support him once the treatment is completed and he can go home. Some centres offer braai facilities and family days so that the patient is still in physical contact with his loved ones.

Many of the staff members, who are employees at centres where drug addicts are rehabilitated, are often former addicts themselves. Not only are they good examples for those patients who struggle with overcoming their addiction, but they are also well aware of the inner struggles a patient addicted to drugs are facing each day.

While every possible kind of treatment, support and drug rehab is available to drug addicts, most of them choose to go back to being an addict once they are cleared from drugs in the rehab centre. There are many aspects that would lead to a situation like this, but the most important thing concerning drug addicts is that no treatment will help an addict to overcome his addiction and dependence if the addict is not willing to overcome it. Unfortunately this is a sad reality and part of our society.
